This new series of paintings resemble strange under water creatures in cave like structures.
Sometimes we are looking at the shapes directly; sometimes we are looking through the shapes into an abyss. I want the viewer to feel like they are taking a breath in a way they haven’t before. These paintings are an attempt to capture the feeling of an epiphany, or a how it feels to be on the verge of discovering something or entering a new place physically or mentally.
I wanted to paint something new and happy. Portals to other worlds, cyclical life and death, wombs. Re birth. Escaping the corporal realm. I wanted to create a new place where we don’t need furniture or bodies anymore.
The shapes and the way they are clustered is an intuitive vision of what would be aesthetically pleasing. They are inspired by clustered coral reefs in tropical water. I started making them because they look like a feeling that I want to have. They are still home to something, a habitat and place to live.
